Conservation:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) oversees conservation efforts related to natural resources as part of creating and maintaining healthy ecosystems. A Natural Resource Concern (NRC) on the other hand, is an expected degradation of soil, water, air, plant, or animal resource base to an extent that the sustainability or intended use of the resource is impaired. According to the USDA, NRCs include issues related to Soil, Water, Plants, Animals, Land, Air, Energy, Climate, Wildlife Habitat, and Invasive Species and Pests. NRCS works at state/regional/local levels with partners to conserve, maintain and improve natural resources. Contact your local USDA NRCS Office for more information.

Soil and Water Conservation

Anyone involved in land development, design, review, permitting, construction, monitoring, inspection, or any land-disturbing activity in Georgia must meet education requirements and be certified by the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC).

The Erosion and Sediment Control Program of GSWCC was set up to improve and protect Georgia's urban soil and water resources by reducing the amount of erosion from urban development sites. The program educates local governments and erosion and sediment control professionals on urban BMPs and certifies professionals to meet Georgia's standards for land-disturbing activities. Additionally, 40 CFR §122.26 requires facilities with industrial storm water discharges to apply for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.
